Sudan—on the map...
We are delighted to update you on ministries and milestones happening in the countries we work with. In Sudan, we have been involved in church planting and schools for the past couple of years. Tom & Norma Smith & their son, Randy, arrived from the States to place AHI (African Hope Inc.), their ministry involving returning Sudanese refugees, under our newly registered work there. They came with us to S. Sudan for the transition—Tim driving with Randy & Rev. Abasoola, Legal Representative for Uganda - and Colleen, Tom & Norma by air. We spent 5 days in and around Juba, having meetings, traveling to the village of Loka, near Yei, and planning future strategies for growth. Another piece of good news was the tax exemption! These are historic times for the Church of God & KHW in Africa & we’re pleased the Smiths were here and all financial support needed for registering and the journey. AHI will now be working under our ministry umbrella of the Church of God of Sudan.

Congo, Rwanda & Burundi
Tim traveled to Rwanda along with church leaders from Uganda, where they met with church executives in Kigali, as well as a Burundi delegate, as our church there is in its initiation stages. From Kigali, continued & crossed over into Goma, Congo. Reconciliation meetings were held with some committees, witnessed progress of the women’s sewing room/office & met with the overseer of the Furaha sponsorship program. All in all good growth in each country & some maturing teams of leadership are taking shape!

Greetings from the Pearl of Africa!

A lot has happened since our last newsletter, and we have so much to tell you. Let us begin with May and bring you up to date.

Ethiopia—Tim flew up to Ethiopia to accompany Reinhard Berle and Getinet Bikele, all country directors for KHW there, to work on administrational structure, review programs, and to formalize contracts on the beginning of construction for our largest project to date on the continent. Upon completion, this will be a multi-million dollar project. We have come a long way from a chalk board nailed to a mango tree and this is only due to fantastic support of so many people with compassionate hearts. We view this as a real sign of God’s hand on ministry through the fruits of development. In that region however, tension with neighboring countries and weather shifts are really affecting the “Horn of Africa”. There is great concern about famine as well as this shifting all the way down to Uganda.

Hayduk group—A group from Western Canada of 7.5 people, headed up by Vince & Karla Hayduk (with the .5 being their small son) arrived on the 4th. The hosting of this group was shared with Glenna Phippen, our medical coordinator. While here, Daniel and Natalie were engaged, which added spice to their trip. The group’s primary focus was participating in building the extension of clinic at Nampunge site. One of the busiest constructional period in our ministry was during this time, as we have projects going up in Ethiopia, Zambia, Congo & Uganda. It’s great that the medical department had the full funding for this new extension, which was officially opened during their time here by the Member of Parliament in the area, and who is a close friend of our family.

Work groups—Tri-S

Coinciding with the W. Canadian group, was a TRI-s team from Anderson University in Indiana led by professor Fred Shively. This group won the award for traveling the longest distance of any that have come—going 11 hours one way all the way to Western Uganda to Kisoro which nestles in the Virunga mountains—famous for sheltering the mountain gorillas. Our church is just on the edge of this scenic area. We had lots of adventure there, starting with our pastor being detained for hosting us there… mmm.. Life here is never dull! Later Pastor Joseph was released and while the team was teaching in the church, the District leader and myself were meeting with government officials, where we found out that recent guerilla activity from Congo had taken place right where we were. Needless to say, our church was known by the time we left Kisoro. TRI-s helped in various building projects around Kampala and led in seminars and were so flexible!

Park Place & other teams

Overlapping the two teams was a group from Park Place CHOG in Anderson. They rolled up their sleeves, pitched in and helped in various projects as well as teaching in a seminar in the village of Kagango, in Central Region. Contribution for a well was given and drilled even while they were there. Clean water or any water for that matter is one of the on going challenges on the whole continent—as not every hole produces water. But, we have been very fortunate to have a relatively high rate of success throughout the country. They gave out goats, chickens and several cows—all super gifts to widows and TAPP clients. A lot of interaction took place with TAPP (Tumaini Aids Prevention Program) in home visitation, as well as participation in bead making and taking part in school programs. Brittany Kier and Sara Elford also were here blending in and out of groups as well as doing their own visitation and encouragement with TAPP. The number of miles covered were impressive!

Then, a combination of 3 Americans and 4 Canadians, blended into one group. This was Jill Mulligan and two ladies, whose focus was primarily on TAPP, and Kelly Peters with three nurses from B.C. Canada, who were open to any area of interaction. The project they worked on was in Busia town, bordering Kenya. There we have a strategic, relatively undeveloped piece of land. They funded flooring for offices, plaster, windows & doors that opened up the sanctuary, and provided ornamental clay venting for the windows. TAPP officially began there & now has an office. Home visits were part of the program too & some of the group were hit by the stark reality of poverty and HIV/Aids. The unifying factor wasn’t whether one was Canadian or American, male or female, but whether one had a dry tent or not... Everyone was wonderfully positive! Jill’s trio left a week earlier & Kelly’s group had another week of village activity in Buliisa, on the shores of Lake Albert. Teaching and games as well as preaching, baptism & child dedication (34) were all part of the program! The nurses were kept busy by offering medical help with basically zero supplies. One patient had such a protruding stomach, we thought she was 10 months pregnant—but, when checked in Kampala, the doctors took out 18 liters/@ 40 lbs of liquid & there was extreme liver damage. She will have to be operated. Death & crippling effects of un/mistreated medical conditions are still, sadly, very common place.

held its first Head Teachers workshop in May

Scott Schomburg, US Tapp Liaison, arrived on the 16th June and stayed with us until yesterday. His focus was on TAPP & he was able to visit nearly all the bead making centers as well as take part in a TAPP training, where 9 Ugandan districts and Rwanda & Sudan were all in attendance. It was a special time & exciting to see TAPP expand at such an amazing speed. An assortment of speakers taught on current topics of HIV/Aids, and at the end, we gave out bicycles, certificates, Bibles, T-shirts, bags & other items, enabling these volunteers to assist their communities.

Graduation Day!

Well, this was a day Jesse had been looking forward to for a long time! He is the first Stevenson to graduate from Heritage International School and has been in the school since Junior Kindergarten. We are very proud of him for achieving this milestone! It was held in the chapel which was wonderfully decorated but still very much a building shell. It was a great function with a lot of spirit and ceremony! Some of the teachers that taught Jesse in his first class are still teaching there. It is great to see how a vision of an international school in turn produces fruit—with its 3rd graduating class.

Reflections

As we come to the end of the school year, and the end of many guests coming and going (for a short time) we reflect on how people come and go through our lives and how they impress or affect us. We were sad to see Daniel, Logi & Micah Muttiah leave our mission team in June. They were with us here serving at Heritage International School and helping with the youth ministry for a year. Laura Goodyear, was here for 6 months and also taught at Heritage. We wish them the best and will miss their great addition to the work here.

Thanks to all of you who support, pray and encourage us in the ministry here. Without great team involvement, and wonderful Living Link support, we could not be active in the ministries we are passionate about. God is blessing in Africa, and we continue to invite you to come and see what God is doing! Our greatest hope for missions is that the sending churches can grow and experience bless-ings by coming and being a part of the Great Commission.

Greetings to all of you! We want to bring you up to date on what has been going on since the container from Canada came. We have been getting such encouraging notes from many of you—thanks for being such an integral part of our ministry. God is doing amazing things here and we are blessed to be part of it. We have been giving out equipment, clothes, books, etc; from the container & people’s lives are being blessed! Thanks for being so generous and sharing your love.

CHILDREN OF PROMISE GROUP IN RWANDA

Colleen along with Joshua, our intern and his fiancée, Audrey, traveled to Rwanda to meet the Children of Promise team, led by Linda Mason—from the USA. We were able to spend the week there and were all “snug as a bug in a rug” in the van we hired— accompanied by Rev. Charles Nsengiyumva & Claudine visiting on the sponsored kids. We enjoyed the various parts of the country and seeing how the church is growing. There are many needs and our prayer is that God will continue to open doors for people to help in this amazing Land of 1,000 hills. Sponsorship is changing lives! While I was away, Tim spoke at one of our Aids/TAPP conferences, attended by Church of God women’s leaders & their husbands. It was very successful!

Work camp from Germany

For most of May, we hosted a team from Germany. They accomplished a lot and mostly worked at the Murchison Bay Naomi Froese school in Kampala. Everything from constructing a dormitory, staff rooms, nursery classes, a kitchen, a soccer field, painting, digging, hauling, and so many other social activities.

A large number of the group were into teaching guitar, singing, holding workshops, and at the end gave out instruments. There was a computer workshop and twelve beautiful laptops were donated to Heritage Int’l School—what a gift!

Pastor Siegfried Froese was the group leader and did a fine job of keeping an eye on the group of 21– a real blend of talents, ages and expertise. They put a roof on one of the churches in the village in basically one day, even through the rain! Real hard work! Kids were sponsored and many friends made as classes were taught and home visits were made.

In the three weeks here, they attended two traditional engagement parties, the 10-year anniversary of the MB/NF School, and enjoyed Easter dinner in the village. We pray your Easter was blessed too!

Jesse’s high school graduation — Well, our 3rd child to graduate from high school will do so on May 31st. Jesse began Heritage Int’l School in Jr. KG and will end this school journey next month.

We are very proud of him and pray his plans for the future will all work out. Tim and his project staff along with input from board members and Daniel Muttiah the school administrator, are working on the chapel. This building has been in limbo due to financial constraints, but now has begun in earnest as we want the graduates to have their ceremony there. It will not be complete, but will give a nice boost to the day! Tim’s creative side is enjoying the challenges in new building strategies..smile. Pray for Jesse as he takes this big step!

Natasha’s accomplishments — in her 2nd year at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Natasha is doing very well. It is grueling & challenging, and there are lots of stresses, but last week, she received two awards at the Awards ceremony on campus for her work there. Artistic design is her gifting and flair!

Logan’s musical forte – ending 8th grade in a month, Logan has enjoyed playing the drums and singing in the school band. He loves to socialize and has a great group of friends in his class.

Announcement — Tiffany (our first born) and Morgan Limoges were united in a civil ceremony in Calgary, Alberta on April 13th. We will be having an African wedding on July 15th. Please pray for them as they start their journey together—and of course for us as we begin this new phase in life—wow!

Work, work and more work to do…

Since April began, we have had a variety of activities keep us busy. From the opening of the TAPP program in the Mutungo area, to a n exciting women’s seminar in Lira District (Laura Goodyear participated in teaching as well) and having the Educational Secretariat meetings to plan for our first Head teachers meeting next month.

We then hosted John Kumuri from Sudan - where we have now 6 schools which have been planted by Africa Hope Inc., (Tom & Norma Smith) We soon hope to visit Juba to meet with all concerned. Thomas Bangurambona from Burundi was also here—letting us know that he too was waiting for programs to start there. God keeps opening doors and we are praying that teams that come, will see the need and feel the call to work here in this time of harvest. On that note, we are pleased that Rose Jones from Ontario, Canada is coming to work with us here in Uganda! She will be doing a variety of jobs, including helping us administratively. She arrives the end of this month—so keep her in your prayers as she adjusts. Three work teams are coming in May—one from Western Canada, and two from Indiana. We anticipate their presence, help & encouragement while they stay in our home & work in the various places. Blessings to all of you who team up with us in ministry—either in prayer, correspondence or financially. It takes all of us linked together to accomplish momentum —and boy—are things moving around here !!!

Praise item! - February 2008

This time, we wanted to share with you the fact that the 40’ container from Canada arrived and is at this very time being off-loaded in our compound. Verification and customs took around 8 days and finally yesterday afternoon, they released it to come to our compound. The truck and trailer are here and the crane is coming to move the container off the bed onto our driveway.

God is good! We were concerned about the container traveling through Kenya – at a time when most vehicles from Uganda are being stoned and damaged and tankers and trailer have been using armed guards to accompany them on their journey. But, God’s hand was upon it – and it is here – PTL! Thanks to the many who assisted in giving, supporting and carrying boxes and items into the container – wish you were here to help off-load too – smile.

YOUTH, YOUTH and more YOUTH

January has certainly been an exciting month—many meetings, functions—such as hosting Heritage Int’l teachers and staff, welcoming Laura Goodyear, teaching at HIS, from Canada to join our mission staff along with our intern fresh out of Anderson University -Josh Weiger. 16 youth ministers and leaders from across the USA, led by Andy Stephenson, National Youth Director, and Spread the Word (STW) director, Ryan Shockey hit the ground running for a busy 5 days.

During their time here in Uganda, youth leaders from Zambia, Sudan, Rwanda & Congo were invited to join in dialogue & discussions on vision and direction for youth in general. Thanks go to the Hoffmans & Mailes Ndao in Zambia for sending their 2 guys such a long way. It was an enriching time, exchanging ideas being challenged to work together with common goals! Our STW Youth team enjoyed a boat trip to Kome Island where their funds had provided for an engine & boat as well as equipment to show films & videos.

In the evening, they were able to witness the effectiveness of these when after seeing the JESUS film for the first time, 15 people came to Christ. Back on dry land –they taught the youth during the Youth Convention where over 240 youth attended. Lots of learning, interaction, singing, dancing & great joy was evident there! When Christ is the common denominator, it is wonderful to see unity unfolding. They also participated in TAPP home visits, church services, baptism and taught the Executive Council in 5 principles of growth. Their time here went so fast and it was special to host them in our home. Both the youth & the Executive Council learnt a lot. Our prayer is that they return often. During this time, Natasha returned to school in South Africa. It was hard to see her go, but we know she enjoys her studies there.

COUNCIL MEETINGS

After this group left, we continued on with the Council and Executive meetings. Time was taken especially for the Council to gather information on the growing ministry of TAPP (Hope). Two members of Parliament took part and Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, taught on the plight of the HIV/Aids disease from its inception to the recent developments of today. Discussions for the next stage of growth in the church spectrum, projects, TAPP drama by the clients, and bead making were all part of the day.

Recently, we received the largest single donation for this ministry from the USA—that was certainly a huge boost! Elections took place the next day for executive members and all representatives were voted back in for another term. Today they are heading home after 5 days in Kampala for teaching & meetings. We were reminded to pray for those living on the border and inside Kenya where many are seeking refuge. We pray for peace there.

ARRIVAL OF CONTAINER

The container sent from E. Canada arrived and is in the final stages of verification. They have promised that tomorrow it will come for off-loading—we are all very pleased and thankful for prayers answered! In all this activity, we really have thanked God for health and strength to see us through each day. This weekend, Colleen is officiating a wedding in the Western Region so always we marvel how the church is growing. Christmas in Zambia

New Years greetings from our home to yours. May this brand new year bring you joy and peace as well as many new adventures.

We were able to spend time in Zambia for Christmas and New Years with Colleen’s parents and enjoy a time of relaxation. Tim checked up on the Kinderhilfswerk projects there and had several meetings with local staff as well as Hoffman's who are assisting with some of the administrational management. We were pleased to meet with church leaders—the Ndaos & share in discussions about the 180 children being supported by Germany & the large land acquisition in our projects. Two youth leaders are invited to attend the upcoming Youth Convention in Uganda this month, where Youth pastors from the U.S. (Spread the Word) and neighboring African countries will be coming to share ideas and experiences for expanding evangelism.

Jesse turned 18 years old there and we enjoyed a time of leisure at a Game Farm in Lusaka.

This was right up his alley and it made a special time for us all. Tiffany was not able to join us this year, but spent Christmas in Calgary, Alberta, with friends. She learnt a new winter sport—snow boarding—so I am sure that it will give her hours of challenge on the slopes. We missed her presence very much!

There were many things to see and do so near Victoria Falls—long hikes, exploring the gorge, seeing animals in the park, visiting local craft markets, and for the kids some rappelling, gorge swings, abseiling, etc.

We enjoyed time with mom and dad catching up and are amazed at their energy! We attended the Livingstone Church of God for their pre-Christmas service and Tim was the preacher. All in all—a bit of business & pleasure wrapped into a nice holiday package!

This month, we have an intern from U.S., Josh Weiger, who will stay with us for 2 months—experiencing ministry and missions. Mid-month, 17 youth pastors & youth will be coming for a whirlwind visit - taking part in the youth convention, visiting the islands, sharing with the church Council, and seeing first hand what impact Spread the Word has had here. We wish you a wonderful 2008 and may God’s presence be felt in every part of your lives!

African Green Christmas 07

Hey! It’s amazing that it’s December—when one should be enjoying a fire, caroling, craft shows and cooler weather. Here it is certainly a challenge to get in the spirit of the season. The cooler breezes are welcome and the lovely green grass, as well as the seasonal lake flies all attribute to the fact, that we are NOT dreaming of a White Christmas—smile! Despite this, we have many celebrations—with our kids enjoying their School banquet and Christmas program, the Upendo Christmas party, World Aids Day - Wow!

Natasha came back from S.Africa the same day as the Queen of England & the Duke landed in Entebbe. Yes, Uganda hosted the Commonwealth meetings and 48 Heads of State were here—including the Prime Minister of Canada—but sadly, we did not meet any of them. It was a hectic time around the city with the dignitaries around. Now everything is again back to it’s off beat pace—a city where travel is a daring experience! Both Logan and Jesse are completing exams and are looking forward to holidays. Jesse will be turning 18 in the next few days—another landmark. He is almost 6’3”!

Upendo Party

As Christmas rolls in so does the time of year for the UPENDO party—always lots of kids, music, dance, food, cakes and sodas—not forgetting the presents! The new Miss Upendo 2008 was crowned and the kids from the different clusters all had presentations which were superb! A Ugandan gospel singer came and sang for us too. It is great to see the kids having a good time!

Kansas Ministry Team

Two work teams from Central Community Church in Wichita spent a month here with us building the church at Mutungo.

The groups did a great job and went on a village trip, where they enjoyed working together with the people there.

Everything from building, home visits, teaching & sharing crafts, playing games, praying for the sick and needy as well as enjoying the hospitality of the Ugandans.

I know each group went home changed and as well left a big impression on the church here.

Island Ministry

The island ministry continues to spread to various districts of Lake Victoria. Tim organized meetings with the leaders and set some goals, planning with them & their Regional Evangelist, Samson Wandera.

They are excited about their boat & new motor which is being used in outreach to new islands. We are so thankful for the youth ministry in the States which has provided funds for them. Anticipation is high for their arrival in January to spend time with the youth & on the islands.

Bible school training extension into Uganda from KIST

These past 2 weeks the extension program from Kenya has started in Uganda.

18 students were part of this Bible training for leaders. It is a good beginning and we pray that students will be able to afford this great opportunity! This is the time when we wish all our family could be together, but this year Tiffany will be in Canada. Pray for us as we spend some time away—to rest and enjoy this special time of the year. Hitting the ground running…

Lots has been happening in our lives in the last few months—travel on road of @ 30,000 miles, air travel, and a whirlwind of activities. We started working on the container situated in Dundas, Ontario, when it was already a 1/4 full of goods.

Julie & Ken Wiebe w/ Harry Hoehne had been filling it and a 20’ container sat beside the other, full of items from W. Canada. Many had given contributions so there was no problem to fill it.

Some irony in all of this—the main packing time for us happened during the hottest week of the summer so, you can imagine what it was like in this 40’ piece of metal….smile. This container has been packed the tightest of all those which have come— more knowledge is learned each time. We thank all who donated time, money & goods to get this container on its way. There is still money needed for final clearing and duties in Uganda so, I know Julie would love to hear from you if you are interested. We appreciate each & everyone of you who care & give of yourselves to help those in need.

Some hi-lights were:

- Seeing old friends pop by to help with packing or food & drinks

- Having Anderson University students bring up the remaining items for packing

- Special times with Ken & Julie

- The bell that we (TIM) picked up in Springfield, OH, for the Headquarters in Kampala

- Seeing all the special things (like sanctuary lights) that will find a home in Uganda & surrounding countries

Holiday time

A special time for us was to get together with Tim’s family in Ontario for a week of relaxation & summer activities.

Special times of water fun, basking on the dock, fire-side interaction, good food & great rounds of games—all made this a time to remember. 3 of our 4 children were with us - Natasha could not be there due to school.

We are thankful for family. It is always amazing to see how fast the children are growing into young adults. All too soon our time was up and we were on the road again—this time to Family Camp in Thamesford, Ontario.

Down at family camp we shared in a Mission session as well as met many pastors and supporters who had assembled there. An addition to this was picking up Sean, our nephew, who was able to spend some time with his cousins there.

They were able to get cray-fish down at the “crik”, hike in the woods and roast marshmallows around the campfire.

So, some special times for the guys. On Saturday, we said our fare-wells, and drove across the border to Findlay, Ohio.

Boys head back to school

When we got back to our apartment in Anderson, it was time to pack up the boys. Findlay had heavy rains & most of the bags on the roof were soaked. We washed everything and repacked ready for them to return to Uganda. This trip was their first time to fly by themselves—and we really prayed for the 30+ hours of flying time ahead of them. Colleen’s parents, the Hoffman’s, had flown up to Uganda to care for the boys in our absence. We were so relieved when they arrived safely!

As we traveled around to our Living Link churches that support us, we were encouraged by the interest and excitement that was shown in the work taking place in the countries we minister to. Many promised to visit and take more in-depth, hands-on involvement in the work we partner in. This thrilled us and we look forward to hosting them when they come. This coming year is already booking up fast. There is so much to do—so many opportunities—we need each other to make more impact.

It was always a pleasure to meet up with friends from the past, newly made friends and see what new things are happening in their lives. We feel awed and privileged to have people like these who take time to be with us, support and pray for us in the work we do. Together we can make a bigger difference!

Logan turns 13!

While we were traveling, the boys were happy to be back in Uganda, going to school and being cared for by their opa and oma. Even Logan’s birthday bash was cared for by them and a cake and party were arranged. He was able to have some friends over for a campfire—roasting marshmal-lows and hot-dogs, playing games and some traditional drums.

Meanwhile, we were visiting doctors and dentists and finding out that for sure age is creeping in—smile! It was shocking when we found out that Tim had skin cancer in his cheek and crown of his head. Thankfully it was found out in time and he was able to have it cut out the day before we left. The surgeon was able to do a skilled job on the stitches. The equatorial sun is very intense so there is need to take more precautions.

Alberta bound!

After our final church in Pennsylvania, we began our trip up to W. Canada. As we traveled we were able to visit with friends, which made it so nice, ending up pulling into Tiffany;s apartment for breakfast. We enjoyed catching up with her latest news. She is really growing up, and it was nice to watch her as she manages her daily life in Calgary. We also were able to get together w/ a few friends and do some business as well before flying back to Indianapolis and then again onto Uganda.

On Ugandan soil again

After many hours of flying, we reached Entebbe and found the airport under construction—as in a maze, we wound our way through immigration lines until we got our luggage. It felt like a sauna—humid and enclosed.

Uganda is hosting the Commonwealth meetings this year, and lots of building and road construction are under way. It was nice to reunite with our boys and with the Hoffman’s who had done so much work and care-taking while we were away. What a blessing they are! We were able to have a couple days visit before they returned to Zambia.

Meanwhile, we are preparing for several groups to visit. As we get our bearings and plug into the work, do continue to pray for our health and strength and for our family that is spread so far apart. Keep those e-mails coming, letters and notes…. It is always a joy to open them up and catch up on your lives. Together in service,

TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT GOD SEES

One of the greatest benefits we experience personally in our partnering with work and ministry teams is, being able for a short period of time, to see through their eyes, their hearts and excitement - the work God is doing here in Uganda. The feeling of joy at a new convert, the wonder in an African morning, the struggles of sights, sounds and smells that are excessive, and fully engaging in the intensity of raw emotion. It is so refreshing to be part of! It strengthens our commitment and confirms our belief in missions and reminds us once again that God is doing a wonderful work in our part of Africa. We are blessed to be a part of it all, so we cajole, push, talk and show mission opportunities to the extreme.The greatest vehicle we have found to share our passion for missions, is to host work camps. As those who come see what God is doing here get excited, they are able to involve themselves in the programs that are on-going. We feel this is the only way to start the recruitment, placement and ownership process in a Church of God mission program. Missionaries are needed, wanted and able to impact massive, growing populations and it doesn’t hurt when they enjoy wonderful weather, nature and hospitality in diverse cultures.

We have had a small group from Germany, missionaries from Kenya as well as 32 work campers from Wichita, Kansas over the last month since we arrived back on African soil. The group from USA have funded and participated in building the Mutungo church, in Kampala in a very large way! We will be dedicating the church this week as soon as the roof is done.

It is great to see the project finished with new contacts made and many, many life changing moments. Home visits were made and as a result, many of those are now coming to church and have accepted Christ. Sponsor kids were met and new ones were taken for sponsorship. This church alone has a goal of sponsoring 100 children with the Children of Promise as they celebrate 100 years of existence as a congregation. Exciting!

In the Great Lake Region – Rift Valley, the Source of the Nile - the Pearl of Africa, we anticipate the coming of the Commonwealth meetings, with 54 Heads of State as well as the Queen of England arriving within this month of November. We are sure they will not see all the large potholes and bumpy roads that we experience or the homes that we visit that are just simple abodes – but for sure, they will enjoy the lovely vegetation and weather that is with us now.

This week, our Church of God schools will have finished their leaving exams – both in secondary and primary, and then the annual women’s retreat takes place on November 12^th at our Kasubi headquarters. Women’s leaders from around the country will be traveling in to enjoy teaching on various topics, hand crafts and times of great fellowship and praising.

On the leadership front, there are many executive meetings, goal planning for the new Island region as well as other districts, visits with leaders from Sudan and Rwanda and District leadership commissioning within each region.

We are thankful for such a wonderful chance to serve alongside the church here in Uganda!

Hi folks!

DEPARTURE FROM UGANDA

We were so pleased that Natasha was able to be with us for one week in Uganda before flying out to the U.S. & as well to celebrate her 19th birthday. The time flew all too quickly, then she was on her way to Zambia and we were on to the States.

ARRIVAL IN USA

On July 14th, we arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana after flying for over 22 hours—& picked up the vehicle waiting for us—drove to our missionary apartment then crashed for a long overdue rest. We were pleased to have all our luggage, a place to stay & nice roads to drive on!

ROAD TRIP

Two days after arriving, Tim flew up to Calgary, Alberta and prepared to bring down our vehicle which we would use as we traveled to churches. Tiffany & Tim drove down together in record time taking 28 hours in total to arrive. It was nice to have them both here safe and sound.

NORTH AMERICAN CONVENTION

As soon as we were settled, we started to have meetings with staff in our missions office. Around that time, the North American Convention began as well— there were sessions, meetings and lots of fellowship time—seeing people and re-connecting after a long time apart.

The final service was the Missions evening where the missionaries could dress in their country costumes and carry flags of the nations they serve in. The service was beautiful & ended with the candle lighting ceremony (only this time we used glow lights)!

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS!

To add to the racing momentum of this busy time, we also had special birthdays to celebrate. Tiffany turned 21 years old and it was so special to have her with us during this time. We tried to have some good family time for both Tiffany & Colleen’s special day as well!

NATASHA IN ZAMBIA

While the rest of us are in the States—and before she goes back to school, Natasha is spending time with Colleen’s parents in Zambia. She’s been assisting with some designing & planning structures in the project and residence. It’s nice to have family in Africa to help during these times of separation & travel. Involved in visiting sites and local churches with her grand-parents as well as just having time to help them re-settle in their “new” home, has all been part of Natasha’s summer adventure.

TRAVELING TO CHURCHES

As we travel to our various supporting churches, we have covered a lot of territory. It is a beautiful time of year to take in a few of the sites and scenery. The boys have spent a lot of time in the back seat of the car but are real troopers. They are great helpers in the setting up of displays at the back of the church. As we share about the work in the countries we work in, we are praying that we will be an inspiration and a blessing to them. It’s good to re-connect & to share in visioning. We have challenged all our Living link churches to come to Uganda to see what they have been supporting. We are pleased that many are interested and some have even mentioned dates of coming. Please pray with us as we continue our travels in USA and E. Canada. This coming week we will be in Ontario filling up the 40’ container bound for Uganda. Come on down...

Furaha Opens in Congo

Furaha, (joy, in Swahili) the Canadian sponsorship program officially kicked off it’s sponsorship program in Congo when we went with Ken & Julie Wiebe, Kathy Smith and Rose Jones to Goma, Congo.

Traveling through Uganda, into Rwanda and then on to Congo was an adventure in itself. On the way though Uganda, we saw sponsor kids that were brought to meet us at roadside meeting points. Meeting church leaders and friends through Rwanda into Congo was also very nice. A diesel shortage at that time made it a bit ambiguous whether we would find fuel at the gas station or not—and of course, prices were really inflated! In Goma, we had a wonderful time of meeting with pastors, women’s leaders and of course the newly sponsored children. Some pastors and women’s leaders had walked 90 kms. to attend this time of fellowship. Wow! Ken shared with pastors, Julie, Rose and Kathy taught the women how to make bags, mats and balls out of plastic bags! That was a learning experience for all… smile.

Later Colleen met with the leaders to discuss the needs of Congo in general. Goma is still a very polluted town, filled with lava and volcanic ash from the eruption of the volcano, Nyiragongo. But, rebuilding is in process and it amazed us how resilient the people are. We thoroughly enjoyed our time together and felt sad when we had to leave to cross the border in Rwanda. In Rwanda, had a meal with Rev. Charles Nsengiyumva and his family in Ruhengeri, then later visited the church in Kacyiru and the Genocide museum in Kigali. Rwanda has really come a long way since those days of devastation.

Traveling back to Uganda, we felt really good about all the children we had seen and the wonderful people we had been with. Later that week, we traveled to Eastern Uganda as well to see sponsor children and were welcomed in the home of Rev. Ojule, the Chairman of the General Assembly. We shared a wonderful evening in his home, and saw many kids there and along the way. All together, we had traveled over 2,000 kms. and saw around 130 sponsored children.

TRI-s Team

A group of 14, led by Fred Shively arrived from the USA on the 9th, May and with little time to rest, traveled straight up to Lira in N. Uganda with Tim, the next day. From there they traveled to the village of Agarokato, where re-settlement is going on, and were able to put on a church roof and interact with the church community.

A huge celebration was held with everyone rejoicing for the great gift given by Park Place Church. Returning to Lira town, sessions with pastors, women, youth and children took place at the church site as well as a large Sunday service ending their time there. Then, a trip to Murchison Falls park was experienced and enjoyed by all, and upon their return to Kampala, were able to take part in the Child sponsorship convention at Kasubi Church of God Headquarters. In the group were Pastors Markle and White from Park Place church. Along with Fred, they were able to lead groups of leaders and pastors in discussions and teaching times. The rest of the group did home visits with TAPP (our aids program) and helped teach and lead sessions during the convention. Several TRI-sers from Kenya joined us for 3 days, while 2 more flew in during the time of the convention. From Canada, we also hosted Daniel Hayduk who stayed for 3 weeks. Our home was full of laughter, discussions and activity with 20 guests. We are so thankful for the bandas across the road, which increase the capacity for hosting larger groups. Now, the next thing to work on is better transportation ...smile. The group faced new challenges when the van we rented broke down in Lira. Lots of close company and tighter personal space—but, all done in a great spirit!

2nd Child sponsorship Convention

This past week, @ 600 children, aged 14 years and above, came in for the 2^nd sponsorship convention. Several Members of Parliament came to address the kids, as well as the closing ceremonies conducted by the Minister of State for Youth & Children.

We had the TRI-s group taking part and some of our Ugandan leaders as well as a touching testimony and singing by the best Ugandan Gospel singer of the year. The children were so pleased to hear and enjoy all these special speakers and great testimonies. There were panel discussions, debates and times to reflect on what the speakers had said. Some of those who had finished sponsorship came to testify about the way sponsorship had turned their lives around for good. Lots of dancing and singing added to the festive feel of the occasion. We again ended the time together with a baptism performed by Pastors Markle and Shively as well as Rev. Abasoola (over 70) and the balloon releasing ceremony.

All the kids were given colorful t-shirts according to their sponsorship group—Kinderhilfswerk, Furaha and Upendo. They looked so great! Fellowship was wonderful and it was thrilling to see how education and spiritual input can enhance the lives of these young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The sponsorship staff was wonderful in helping to put this all together as well as financial assistance from the various sponsorship offices, which was vital to the convention’s success! Again I thank you sponsors for caring and loving your sponsor child. God bless you richly!

Re-settlement in Northern Uganda

During a recent trip to Lira, Colleen visited the IDP camp of Anai, along with Daniel, Scott and Krysta. Only a few families remain as most are in the process of re-establishing their lives back in their home villages. After all these years, it is a real challenge!

A quick visit to the church school, the women’s group and TAPP clients were scheduled. It was great to see one of the new calf's born to one of the ladies’ cow projects. A trip was taken to several IDP camps that are still functioning—Awayi as well as Barlonyono. It is sad to see the state of these camps where still so many families live in terrible conditions.

We covet your prayers for the resettlement process as well as the peace process that is still underway with the LRA in the north and for hope and ways to assist families that are looking to begin again. Many children have known no other life, other than the inside of a tarp or a grass hut in an IDP camp. Their needs are great and as a church, we are trying to stand with them during this transition — with clean water, church roofs, agricultural needs, schools, medical care, and general care for the community. A lot needs to be done yet!

Party Time!

It was a challenge to plan a surprise birthday party for Tim—turning 50, while we had special guests from Germany—the President of KHW Global Care—Reinhard Berle and his wife as well as 2 other couples. Part of their coming was to be part of Tim’s birthday celebration—so, yes, he had a small clue something was up. We enjoyed an evening with some of the friends we have known in Uganda for the last 20 years, and that made it very special—music, speeches, a toast, drama, gifts and of course great food and a cake! Tiffany sent a special power point for the occasion and Natasha was able to get there in time from school. She and the boys had special readings, poems and tributes to their dad!

We had a super evening celebrating Tim’s accomplishments and life up to the present, even the leaders of Congo & Rwanda were present. On the 9th June, our German visitors left and we started preparation for our trip to the States for home assignment. Between packing and organizing for our leave, time just flew by and before we knew it - June 13th had arrived. So, from our family to yours, we send you our love and prayers—we are so pleased to be partnering in ministry with you.

Anderson University Work group

From the beginning of the new year, we were blessed to have a group of AU students led by Cassie and Kristen come and take part in our HIV/Aids program TAPP. They were immersed in training volunteers as well as refurbishing an older house into a new office. A great time of sharing and bonding took place & on the whole some wonderful relationships were formed—many that will last a life time! A great group with a lot of dreams! AU has this special relationship with East Africa and the impact of new programs will be widely felt.

Sunday school workshop

A Sunday school training was held in Kampala to distribute the new curriculum. Every church in Uganda will now be able to get their Sunday schools active. Factors such as high transport, lack of budget, materials and concepts have hindered the program from taking off. Hence, the workshop has sparked the year off with excitement & determination to all who attended from various districts.

Zambia Vocational projects

Tim was down south in Livingstone for several weeks, checking on the progress of the Kinderfhilfswerk (KHW) vocational projects. The buildings are coming together slowly and consist of a computer training shop and a carpentry workshop which will include local carvers. This encourages the community in their expansion of job training. A church is also being constructed and roofed in the vicinity. Then, meetings with Rev. Mailes and Oscar Ndao, the country leaders occurred and Colleen’s parents as they await their work permits. Lots of plans and discussions about development and future focus occurred as well as meetings with the local chiefs—which make life more interesting. A lot of history has taken place in this area linked to David Livingstone, the renowned explorer to Africa. Of course, we cannot forget Victoria Falls, one of the 7 wonders of the world—what a sight to behold!

Medical Miracles

Lately there has been a lot to cheer about even amid some real tests of life. We have had a few children go through surgery that has changed their lives. One has been Amos, a little boy of 4 1/2 who is undergoing skin grafting resulting from a fall into a fire while having an epileptic fit. We thank Kinderhilfswerk for assisting in this. Another is Baby Johnson, who was born with a large swollen head (Hydrocephalus) and has now been operated on and looks just beautiful! We are so thrilled when children come into the office healthy and happy after having been assisted nutritionally & surgically. It makes our day so much brighter and gives us joy!

Children’s Party

We enjoyed a wonderful party with the sponsor children in February. A brass band led the kids around the neighborhood & later a karaoke group warmed up the celebration. Fashion & talent shows preceded a wonderful lunch, cakes, and the first ever MISS UPENDO competition. Christmas presents were distributed—even when the power went out. Have you ever tried giving out presents in the darkness? What a tough & challenging time that was...smile. By 10:30 p.m. completion was in sight & plenty of happy children went to bed tired and worn out from the full days’ events. Sponsors, you are making such a difference in the life of your chosen child. Bless you!

Mutungo church

Again we are pleased to share that one of our city churches, Mutungo congregation is now being assisted by a church in the States to build a permanent building. The land has been purchased and even a thanksgiving Sunday was held to celebrate on the new piece land. We look forward to October/November when 2 groups will be coming to share in the construction of the church. What an amazing teaming up of ministry—and a real answer to prayer for this congregation!

Rwanda & Congo

Colleen was able to visit Rwanda and Congo this month—mostly to encourage those in leadership as well as visit the Ejo Heza (children of promise) sponsored children. They were able to enjoy a Sunday service in the church in Gitarama that is now permanent. Memories of the last visit came flooding back when all there were almost blown away by the wind. Kigali, Ruhengeri, Kabali and Gisenyi were all part of the visitation program. The children looked so healthy—what an improvement from last year. Then a quick trip across the border into Goma, Congo, visiting the church as well as meeting with the church leadership. With so many needs in these two countries, it is necessary for a lot of prayer and hard work to occur in order to raise the level of development.

Family Updates

Heritage Int’l School is experiencing growth his year—and a new focus on the IGSCE program of testing for the British curriculum has added a new dimension. Both boys are very busy with their studies and with soccer. Jesse is preparing for a mission trip as part of his community service for school and both he and Logan are preparing for the upcoming Talent Night, where Logan sings and Jesse is in a play. We are excited for that! Natasha is involved in her studies in Nelson Mandela Metro University, in South Africa, and Tiffany is working in Calgary, Alberta.

We are thankful for e-mail and text messaging which keeps us connected with each other and wishing they were closer!

Tim and I are many times on the road—each taking our turn so that one of us remains home with the children. Presently, we have a house full of guests—Anderson University nursing students from Indiana and a German work group. So, life is never dull and always full of activity and commotion. Continue to keep in touch—we appreciate your letters and notes of encouragement!

Greetings to all of you from Black Diamond, Alberta, Canada!

We have enjoyed a variety of weather from “Chinooks” (weather arch that brings in a change of warm air) to icy, cold, windy & snowy weather that has made this last November one of the coldest on record.

Natasha & Jesse are enjoying their first work experience and Logan is wishing he too could get some work in order to help his shopping list for Christmas. Tiffany is working as well, and figuring out possibilities for her future. Life is so different here and we are so pleased to have some time with our children and help them focus on their future.

Recently, Tim & I visited Ontario where we had a couple days with Tim’s family and spent time with Julie & Ken Wiebe discussing FURAHA (Canadian sponsorship program). Later we met with those who had all been out on work camps to Uganda at Harry and Ingrid Hoehne’s in Hamilton. It was wonderful to see those who had come out to help in the work and we enjoyed a great time of fellowship and catching up (as well as great food!).

From there, we went to Anderson, Indiana for meetings with Global Missions and discussed many issues relating to the family, our work and future goals. Banking & medical meetings, as well as plans for our home assignment were all part of the agenda. But, we also made time to see friends and colleagues from work camps, the Children of Promise program, Heritage International School and various other contacts. We were able to leave some stuff for the work camp coming out in a couple of weeks from the University. They will be working with the AIDS program – TAPP and Colleen will be there to keep them busy…smile.

Since our State-side return, the family is having medical checkups – making sure all are healthy for our return to Uganda. A few medical concerns have been cared for and some will be on-going. We always appreciate your prayers for health and safety as road conditions, stress, and long working hours in an uncertain environment can sometimes take their toll.

Continue to pray for Heritage International School – for teachers and administrational needs. Amanda who is a short term mission staff will be leaving the end of the year for Canada, and so there will be a need to find a replacement for that post. We thank her for helping out in many ways and wish her success back in Canada.

While we “adults” were away, the kids experienced the coldest weather they have ever felt…a very new experience needless to say. But, they have enjoyed a few outings on the “magic carpets” and the Rocky Mountains. The sunrises reflecting on the mountains are a gorgeous pink and turquoise coloring that can only be seen, to be believed. In a couple weeks, Jesse will celebrate his 17th birthday. He especially will enjoy this birthday here as he is our only child to be Canadian born. Time flies, I tell you!

Despite our distance from Uganda, we are linked through phone text, phone and e-mail with our partners in the States, Germany and Uganda. Finances are always an important part of a balanced flow and we are fortunate to have a great working relationship with our banking partners in all these areas. Continue uplifting the work in Uganda and surrounding countries as they end off the year of 2006. Struggles continue to be faced, but they are working through them and we are trying to encourage from across the oceans.

Greetings from snowy Canada!

Yes, we are here for a couple of months to help our girls, Tiffany and Natasha in their re-settlement process. More decisions have to be made and our family is adjusting as children grow up and slowly leave home!

Colleen came from Germany, along with 7 singers from the Kasubi High School choir - all to attend the 30 year celebrations for Kinderhilfswerk in Gudensberg. The singers were able to blend rich voices and Afro-Brazilian rhythm with a young lady from Curitiba, even though they could not communicate in words. Being sponsored through the sponsorship program, these young people were able to share in school work shops, government groups as well as take part in the festivities.

Tim was able to fly in for the weekend and joined other continental directors from Asia and South America during discussions at the KHW International Forum where Reinhard Berle, the president of KHW Global Care along with the KHW staff welcomed many of us - from Ethiopia, Uganda, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Kosovo, Holland, Denmark, Brazil, and of course Germany. Sponsors and donors also joined in this special occasion. During that time, the European pastors conference was also in session, so saw some friends there too.

Here in Canada, Colleen was able to help her parents, Stan and Marion Hoffman pack up and get their new assignment to Angola on the go. Wow! Was that ever a different feeling - to see them going off and being left behind...

Natasha and Tiffany are both working and learning about earning power, bank accounts, debit cards and the like. We also made a trip to Winnipeg, where we saw old friends from Uganda, and visited the University of Winnipeg, one of the possible choices in schooling.

Tim and the boys, Jesse and Logan, pull in tomorrow from Uganda and are just in time to see October phase out and enjoy the cold weather! They will be doing their school work from home, so that will be a new experience for the next 6 weeks.

Tim has been busy! There has been meetings in the north - all part of a new method of confirming every church in Uganda, which presently number 548. Some of the executive attended the gatherings where certificates of commissioning and Bibles were distributed.

Relief that has been given by Canada is being used to put up some housing for those living in the IDP camps and are now having to relocate. Roofing too is being put in various churches.

Then, a trip to Zambia was made where Kinderhilfswerk is putting up a technical school. Tim checked the new site, where several housing units are being erected. There will be several sites and educational facilities in and around the town of Livingstone. Meeting local chiefs, briefing local tradesmen, and getting reports was all part of his 6 day journey. Jesse and Logan were on their own in Kampala for those few days and did well.

It will be nice to be together again - to catch up and to plan for our family. To all those who support, write and pray for us - we are so thankful! Keep up the good work!

PULSE ON PAKISTAN

Thank God for the freedoms we have! The freedom of open worship, evangelism, where to live and work, an uncovered face,—all made very real as Tim traveled Pakistan. As he traveled with Reinhard for a week, experiencing wonderful hospitality along side a panoramic and picturesque country, people embraced both as long lost relatives. Other than being noted as a minority, there was an absolute feeling of welcome and love. Pakistan in a nutshell is a vibrant and growing economy. Country wide, it presents opportunity both in development and relief, which filters into the Christian communities we visited. Traveling thousands of kilometers from Lahore, Islamabad, Gilgit and into the Kashmir area, they were able to visit the camps and see the much needed relief that had been provided by KHW Global Care to earthquake victims since last year. 100,000 plus have been affected and even while there, landslides washed away parts of roads as they drove by.

Now back on solid ground, it seems like a good story. Reinhard & Tim were able to preach in two churches, were hosted and escorted by a Christian member of Parliament which exemplified the continual request in every Christian community - “Be a part of us, support us, pray for us and don’t forget us.” They feel alone, and sadly they have been. Through KHW a partnership has begun and with it there is hope.

The difficulty in the struggle for greater freedom for the Christians there, makes the conflict in Sudan all the more real to us. Southern Sudan, emerging from the religious oppression of the north requires our URGENT help so they too do not lapse into isolated pockets of Christian communities. Pray for us as we continue to work on registration and expansion of the work there.

DREAMS INTO REALITY

We are so thankful to those of you who have given donations to the Aids program—TAPP in Uganda. Without these we would not be able to reach out as we are doing. The program is expanding rapidly and now many of the clients are benefiting from the small project programs they have started up—such as small scale businesses and animal projects. This has enabled TAPP women to stand up with dignity and some are using talents such as singing in the church choir with such joy, it truly is heart warming.

The children attending the KUPONA program are bubbly and energetic. The smiles that light up their faces are beyond description. It is something one has to experience personally, so what are you waiting for?

Many miracles have taken place through this program and we thank God daily for His provision and for wonderful staff that work with us. Each one adds so much love and care—they are truly called to serve in this ministry.

EXPANDING CHURCH

Recently, the Executive Council met at Kasubi, our headquarters, where teaching as well as meetings and discussion on the growing church in Uganda and surrounding countries, took place. Both of us were able to take part in various capacities. The churches in Uganda number 500+, therefore the need for leadership training, TEE, & permanent structures grows daily. The church raises money for the building up to the roof level & in partnership, we try to assist with the roofing.

This last year, Harry Hoehne from the Hamilton CHOG in Ontario raised enough money to purchase hundreds of Bibles in vernacular languages, equipping the expanding church. What a blessing! Theological training such as TEE, Bible School and leadership courses are very necessary to keep pastors and leaders equipped for the huge task before them. Please pray with us that needs such as these can be met.

Statistics

With a growing church comes many needs & one of the most critical is the fact that congregations are generally 70% widows, orphans, & jobless youth. This is a heavy load for the church to carry! Colleen visited one such group in Mbale (East) & was challenged—some are on the verge of starvation due to climate changes, substantial dependents and poor dwelling places. But, as they come together, the support and fellowship eases many heartaches.

Our sponsorship programs continue to grow—for which we are grateful. These life changing programs provide such HOPE & a future for children who would have little chance for education, nutrition, healthcare or spiritual nurturing. Last weekend, we attended Manueli’s graduation—with a Bachelor’s degree. It is exciting to see a child like Manueli accomplish so much! Sponsoring a child is a special way to give opportunity to those less fortunate than yourself.

ODDS N’ ENDS

The boys are enjoying school. We have started with more children than we ever have at Heritage Int’l School and the largest staff in our history. It is exciting to see the upbeat spirit around campus.

Jesse is now in 11th grade & Logan is in 7th. Tiffany & Natasha are in Canada staying with Colleen’s parents until they head off to Angola. They are working this fall and planning for college in January. Having some family time this summer was so great, but now with the girls away, it leaves quite a gap!

This week we had both the Legal Representatives from Congo (DRC) and Rwanda here with us. There are so many opportunities that are present there and in areas such as women & sponsorship, we are attempting to give hope which assists in grounding the church. Please pray for these men as they desire to create stability and strength there.

Colleen is preparing to go to Germany next week, where she will attend the celebrations of KHW Global Care’s 30th Anniversary. Accompanying her are 7 Kasubi High School singers. Fantastic! Graduation & Alumni Reunion in Kenya

Kenya Safari!

We just got back from Kenya where we enjoyed celebrating Rift Valley Academy’s Centennial & Alumni week.

12 of our class who graduated 30 years ago were present so that was very special! We enjoyed a visit from Terri, RVA classmate and our maid of honor, who stayed with us for 2 weeks prior to the reunion.

Graduation for Natasha was a memorable experience as well. 76 of her class walked up barefoot to receive their high school diplomas. It was neat to hear that 9 in her class were 2nd generation and 1 a 3rd generation graduate. History in the making! Tim was honored to dothe graduation benediction.

Please pray as Natasha joins her sister in Canada for the Fall, that she will adapt easily and be able to get into the right college. Tiffany also attended her 2nd year reunion and had 46 classmates present. It was a great bonding time for them. Third culture kids lead a different life and one of the hardest things they have to face is saying goodbye to friends and family throughout their life time. Pray for our children as they pass through these changes and new experiences.

Travel Bug

Tomorrow, Edrin Serwano, Colleen’s sponsorship assistant and Bashir E. Wamala, a sponsor child fly in from the States, where they attended the Int’l Youth Convention in California. This was a real honor for them and we are thrilled that Uganda was able to represent Africa there.

Tim is flying out tomorrow night & travels to Pakistan with Reinhard Berle, the president of KHW Global Care. This trip will open new doors of opportunity. Natalie Kober, who has been our guest for the past 3 months will be returning to Canada this week. Time has flown by and we know Africa will be in her heart. Life is never dull here with a constant flow of traffic outside and inside our doors. As people pass through, we pray they will be blessed. Family Fun!

Mombasa here we come!

It was time for us to have a little holiday and to give Natasha a little graduation gift of going to the Indian Ocean. We love the beach and enjoyed snorkeling, taking long morning walks, playing games, eating sea food, and just watching the waves nibble up the shoreline. Too soon, we sadly drove away from the coast and mile by mile returned inland. Our vehicle was loaded down with luggage and all of Natasha’s school properties collected during her 3 year stay at RVA.

Farewell to Canadian work campers

The Canadian work group, led by Stan & Marion Hoffman, left the first week of June after having done a wide span of activities. They were able to see sponsor kids, finish off the Kasaroza church and build the leadership training hostel (L/T) up to the ring beam adding some windows & doors. We enjoyed a meal out before they left for Canada. We thank them for a good job done and hope the roof on the L/T hostel will still get done, as well as finishing the painting jobs inside and out. Financial help is certainly appreciated in this! Colleen’s parents are still with us for a few more weeks.

Since the groups have left, we have been busy cleaning rooms, clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, tents, etc; Catching up on correspondence, reports, and our usual work has also been high on our priorities—thanks for being patient with us…

Trip to Kome Island

A trip to Kome Island was certainly a trip that will always be remembered by the youth group from Casper,Wyoming. First of all the preparation boat that went before the group, never got to its destination because of motor problems and then the next day, when they took off to the island, the preceding groups was rescued on the way. Then, after setting up camp in the dark, they realized they had pitched tents in a spider’s nest. Thousands of spiders were all over the place! (the new name for the Island is now “Spider Island”) Tim had them cut down trees, travel aroundpart of the island introduced to them Camping 101. On the boat trip back, the motor caught fire, then eventually worked again only to take 7 + hours to return to shore. Needless to say, they were all happy to get back to the house. Smile.

June 12th, the group left for the States—with a lot to tell friends about back home. We appreciated their vitality, friendliness and many abilities that were used while here (especially painting..ha!).

EXCITING EVENTS:

RWANDA
Now 40 children are sponsored with Children of Promise and as well the governments full recognition of the new executive that have been elected into office, despite some real opposition by ex-leaders. PTL!

SUDAN
Steps in registration for the Church of God and Kinderhilfswerk Global Care are going forward with the government in full co-operation. Seven children are now sponsored through Kinderhilfswerk and land has been purchased in Endi Endi.

CONGO

Final steps in the registration and recognition of the Church in Congo are being worked on in Kinshasa by the top leadership.

BURUNDI

Recently, the leader of the one church in Bujumbura came to visit again. They are asking for the Church of God to register there.

Grandmothers Housing

It is so wonderful to see a smile light up the face of an old grandmother when one of her grandchildren gets a sponsor! There is nothing quite like it! Another way we try to help is bydonating slowly to build a permanent room for living in. Most live in squalid conditions—mud rooms, with not much to call a roof. When, complete, the family moves in and the change inliving conditions is incredible. There is then an inheritance to leave their grandchildren that no-one can take away from them. We call this project “love your grandmothers”.

It is wonderful to see God’s hand in so many areas of our life—this week.We were able to witness the handing over of a female calf—aptly named Kirabo—gift in Luganda. The pastor’swife who received it was so excited and now prepares a small shed for it. These blessings are all results from the generosity of the Women of the Church of God in USA.

Small Projects

Other special ways to help needy people are through small projects for the TAPP (HIV/AIDS) program. These small projects make such a difference in the lives of disadvantaged families. The extra money from small projects puts food on the table and pays partial school fees for the children.While the workgroups were here, many home visits were made which encouraged hurting and affected families. Thanks to those that responded in love.

Eye Sight Restored!

Another great happening this past week was when Pastor Eriya from Sudan was able to have his eyesight restored through a cataract operation here in Kampala. They operated on eye at a time and at the end of 3 days he was able to see as he hadn’t been able to for some years. It was exciting to see his happiness and gratitude.

Family News

We are getting ready to attend Natasha’s graduation from Rift Valley Academy in Kenya next month, & are thrilled that she has done so well in school. Plans are in process for her future and choices of colleges, so please pray as she makes decisions and as we also adjust to this new phase in our family. Tiffany is busy at the KUPONA (healing) program with the kids she loves so much—all from HIV/Aids affected homes. She is also preparing for Kenya and the alumni/reunion of her class & as well there will be the 100 year reunion of the school. Jesse & Logan are enjoying free days of play & exploration around the lake. They have lots of adventures & most evenings our supper table is a cacophony of sounds, gestures & discussion. No quiet dinners at our house…. Smile. One of our long time friends, Terri Rosenau is here visiting from Canada & working with us for 2 weeks. It is great having her in our home! We have also been celebrating many birthdays in May, June & July—Happy Birthday to one and all!! Enjoy your summer & families.We always enjoy hearing from you & knowing your news as well! BUILDINGS RISE UP!

We are so pleased to see the leadership training hostel at Kasubi Headquarters in Kampala going up daily. As the work camp from Canada works hard, every day we see a change - doors and windows going in, plastering done by Tim's crews - it is looking great! While building is going on, other things are taking place too - visits to HIV/Aids homes, medical trips, and sponsor visits with their kids. A group from US that is specifically working with our HIV/Aids program TAPP is here as well, so our home is certainly full of life and bustling with activity. There has not been too much sickness and for that we are thankful! The group from Canada is now in Western Uganda participating in a grand opening for the Kasaroza church, as well as painting the inside of the church, teaching sessions and games for the kids, youth & adults. With all the people coming in and out of our doors, we see so many activities taking place and people being blessed!!

50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

We enjoyed a huge party and celebration for mom and dad’s (Stan and Marion Hoffman) golden anniversary. The Ugandan church had a big part in making it a great success - dressing the bride in a wedding dress, while the groom wore a traditional Kanzu. Mom had two attendants - Natasha, our daughter (who flew home from Kenya) and Cassie Trentaz (one of the work campers). Logan was the page boy - waving a cane, while Fred Shively (with the TRI-s team) escorted them down the aisle. It was fun - with songs, speeches, food, and 50 wedding cakes! Congratulations mom and dad on 50 years of marriage!

YOUTH CONVENTION

The youth convention ended very well - with a large group of youth getting baptized - over 100! There was a tremendous showing this year with over 600 youth in attendance! Most of our teaching was done by visitors from USA and Canada and that was a great treat! A super choir competition took place with the group from Rakai coming in first. Presentations were made of guitars, soccer balls and bibles - thanks to all the donors who contributed to make this convention a success.

TAPP (NAT'L AIDS PROGRAM) TRAINING

The work group from USA, led by Cassie Trentaz were involved in the 2nd training for young leaders from 10 districts - all on HIV/Aids - with special speakers, active discussions, launching a new area for outreach for TAPP in Kampala and making home visits to new families - all affected by this devastating affliction. At the end of the week, bicycles, bibles, bags, T-shirts, sewing machines & certificates were presented to each district participant. All agreed it was a tremendous learning experience. There will be a new thrust of teaching and visitation into their home districts.

FAMILY CORNER

The boys are now out of school for the summer. Tiffany has arrived and is slowly getting over jet lag. Every corner of our house has a body in it - so, we tend to step very carefully when moving around...smile. Tim & I take turns taking groups up-country on visits - where villagers are always happy to receive visitors.Today 11 work campers arrived from Casper, Wyoming - led by Tiffeny Shockey. We will be visiting a village this weekend, teaching, having fellowship and showing the Jesus film. Do pray with us - for safety on the roads as we travel, for health of all our visitors and that we will continue to be used to advance excitement in missions. Tim & I on the lake

Kome Island here we come!

Greetings from Uganda, where we say - don’t go looking for excitement, it will find you! The maiden voyage of the “Pearl of Africa”, the canoe that belongs to the youth, was set and we were psyched to set sail! What an adventure - the winds were intense and the waves were excessive! All of us were thankful to make it to Kome Island in one piece - a 3 1/2 hour journey one-way. Traveling with us were our sons Jesse & Logan, and Vince, Karla, & Danny Hayduk from Canada. It will be a trip they will not forget for some time ha! Surveying has taken place and now things are ready to finalize the land that will be.

Youth Convention 2006

This upcoming week, the National Youth Convention is scheduled. We will have youth from every region attend and this year we are excited to have many visitors speaking and partaking of the activities. Please pray for the youth as they travel in from all over Uganda - for safety and for a time of renewal and great fellowship!

High in the Mountains of Elgon

Tim attended a seminar in Wenekali, South Bugisu District where we have 15 churches. He was able to teach and meet with pastors and was accompanied by the Gen. Assembly Chairman Rev. Ojule. It is always so encouraging to see the excitement when one visits the rural areas. He came home with some gifts of livestock and assorted foods. The latest count of churches in Uganda is now 548 and we will be adding another region to the existing 5 - that of the Island region, which is larger than Uganda’s land mass.

Sudan expansion

This month Rev. Moses Abasoola went up to Sudan to get our land surveyed and to get our schools registered there. They were able to meet with the government official and borders were established. Every visit strengthens the churches and the congregations. We now have 6 sponsored children with KHW there. PTL!

TRI-S & Canadian Team

We are pleased once again to be hosting a TRI-S group of 10 from Indiana. The leader is Fred Shively on his 4th trip to Uganda and they will be doing some work on schools, involved in the National Youth Convention and making a village trip to the NE part of the country. We are so pleased that there is this relationship with the University where young adults are able to see for themselves different cultures and countries.

NEXT WEEK, on the 15th, we receive a group of 14 from Western Canada led by Stan and Marion Hoffman. They will be with us for 3 weeks and will be working on the Leadership Training Hostel as well as opening a Church in the western part of Uganda. On the 16th, a group of 4 from US, led by Cassie Trentaz arrive here as well to work with the Aids Program TAPP. We will have a full house of 30 people - what a blessings that will be! More visitors are coming this month too - from Eastern Canada and from Casper, Wyoming - so, we will keep in touch and keep you updated on the activities coming out of the Stevenson household! Tiffany, our daughter will be arriving on the 25th May as well - right in the middle of several groups…. We are thrilled and anxious to have her home with us. Death Has No Sting!

Many times in our work we are faced head on with circumstances that envelope us in fatality. Recently, many of our leaders, pastors, acquaintances — have been involved in near death accidents. Of course, Ugandan roads and taxi drivers are renowned for their recklessness…

This past week, we had one of those days when it seemed we were going to suffocate with the heaviness and emptiness one feels when encountering continual loss. In our Aids Program, we visit homes and one sees many hopeless situations - with no-one to assist in their struggle for medicine, food & shelter, children’s school fees and the loneliness of being abandoned. After a day of visiting, praying and sharing hope—we left feeling very sad. Then, news came that one of our sponsor children who had just finished his technical training - had dropped dead! What a shock for everyone! On the way home, traveling with several work campers, we saw a boy of around 18 being hit and driven over by one of the taxis — right in front of us. It was almost too much for us to take! But, many people live with the knowledge that they will soon die — I thank God that this Easter we have confidence that death has no sting —Jesus, through his death conquered death for us! Through the Aids program TAPP, we are seeing many come to Christ — and that is worth rejoicing about.

For the last 2 weeks we have been hosting a group of 16 from Germany, led by Pastor Siegfried Froese. They have been working at the Murchison Bay Naomi Froese school, Kasubi, and Mawanga. Things are shaping up and looking real nice due to painting, plastering, building, fencing, tiling, etc; Easter will hold a whole new meaning for them this year.

Weddings galore!

It has been so exciting to see many young couples getting married this year. Tim & I have been getting our share of “tying the knot” and are always fascinated with the new fashions & cakes. As a church, we embrace the celebrations and good times. Many times the battles are many—so, let the good times roll!
